The New Jersey Legislature serves a two-year term, divided into two one-year sessions. Although the sessions are split, work from the first year can continue into the second, so the difference is mostly ceremonial. Each new term starts at noon on the second Tuesday in January of even-numbered years. Any unfinished work at the end of the two years expires.
The bill would require school districts to allow home-schooled students to participate in school-sponsored extracurricular activities in the student's resident district.

The bill would require every homeschooling family to register annually, provide documentation that their curriculum “aligns” with the New Jersey Learning Standards, and submit a portfolio evaluation letter from a qualified examiner that “appropriate” education is occurring.

The drafted S 1796 would require every homeschooling family in New Jersey to file a letter annually with their public school superintendent expressing their intent to homeschool their children.
